Pentagon shuts down

I love it that he says it's an accepted policy. This is how social media should be, integrated into the system and not a stand alone department.

Gone are communication pro Price Floyd and technology exec Sumit Agarwal, the two men brought in during the past two years to get the Pentagon comfortable with online interaction in the 21st century. Floyd, a relentless tweeter, decamped in August to join defense giant BAE Systems.

That might be why Floyd isn’t sweating the lack of a social media chief. “The policy is in place,” he emails from the U.K., “no need to have a champion since it is being implemented literally everywhere.”

Are you using Diaspora yet? Wonder what the heck it is?

I'm in the join diaspora pod too and I have to say I haven't used it too much yet, but the concept is great and I see it as a powerful alternative to Facebook if people adopt. I'd love to hear where you think you'll go with it, or if you'll use it at all.

What is Diaspora, and how does it affect social media marketing?

The intent of Diaspora is to decentralize your online social network, remove commercialism and help you regain control over your data.

Who should navigate your social media ship?

This is a huge q for every organization and especially resource strapped nonprofits. How do you decide who has the breadth of knowledge of the organization as well as social media to tackle this on your org?

Please, please tell me it's not the new intern because "he's young and he has a Facebook page"!

Some organizations struggle with where social media should “live” within the staff organization chart. Compelling arguments can and have been made for it to live with the web department, with the marketing/communication department, or with the development department. Based on our experience, I propose to you that “who” works with social media is much more important than “which department” in this case.

Social Value Index?

"Social Currency will become increasingly biased toward social priorities instead of Wall Street priorities and the pesky little flaw in Market Capitalism will correct itself."
Hmm, what do you think?

Amplify’d from www.ingenesist.com
There are many indices that help us to track comparative values. These include the Dow Jones Industrial Average and the S&P 500, etc. People track them over time to help define productivity. Productivity (you and I going to work everyday) is what gives the dollar it’s value, not the other way around. Likewise, the Social Value Index will compare the financial profit (or loss) of a product or service with the social profit (or loss) of that product with respect to time.

Google Wave is dead, is Foursquare next?

Honestly I think Gowalla gets it better than Foursquare but all in all geotagging has lost it's thrill. This post points out some good ideas to make it more useful/interesting but will it last? What do you think?

Amplify’d from www.connectioneconomy.com

Google officially axed the underutilised (and overhyped) Google Wave project last week (read Fast Company’s obituary here). I have a fear that my favourite geo-tagging program, Foursquare, will go the same way.

In summary, then, Foursquare has the potential to be brilliant. But only if it learns the lessons of other social media success stories. Connect us, and enable us to connect! Speak to us, and enable us to speak to you. Enable us to contribute to the development of the system.

Will and Jada Smith pitch in for @CharityWater

I'm so impressed with what Charity Water has done in just a few years. Being able to micro-donate and leverage relationships (social guilt if they don't donate) is a great way to raise even more. They've really become a role model for other nonprofits wanting to do the same thing.

Content Curation or Plagiarism?

I just read this post from Steve Rosenbaum –"Content is King" -- no longer. Today, the world has changed. "Curation Is King."He's all braced to be attacked by the content creators for this, and although the title did make me bristle at first he's got a lot of good points here too, so I'll restrain myself.

Steve's post stuck a chord with me because I create  content that is then duplicated on a number of sites that "curate" about social media. Some of them give my words a reach far beyond my own site so I'm happy to get the ink. There there are sites like Amplify and Lazyfeed that allow users to excerpt the good bits and comment on them creating a whole new conversation and they encourage the reader to go to the source and read the original post as well. Who can argue with that kind of value?

Just last week an account manager for a company I'd mentioned in a post told me my post was being plagiarized with links all over and sent me links. Most I knew about and they'd gotten permission to duuplicate, others had quoted, but a few had literally lifted content and put their own name on it. A couple included the text that Tynt automatically adds to my posts (and Steve's too I see) to the source of the information without even realizing it. (Hello Bot)

So where do you draw the line between calling it plagiarism or curation? Does it matter?
